Mike Markkula was more than Apple’s first investor and chairman: The former Intel executive set the foundation for Apple’s three-pronged marketing philosophy, which called for empathy (understanding customer needs), focus (eliminating distractions), and imputing (applying the same quality and rigor to a product’s presentation as you would the product itself). “When you open the box of an iPhone or iPad, we want that tactile experience to set the tone for how you perceive the product,” Steve said decades later. “Mike taught me that.”
